## Definition

The right of an artist, and of their heirs for a period after death, to receive a percentage of the price when an original work of art is resold through an art market professional such as an auction house.

Droit de suite exists in the European Union and the United Kingdom, among other places, but not in every country. Where it applies, thresholds, rates and caps are set by law, and the auction house usually collects the amount according to local rules and pays it to the artist or a collecting society. Because the rules depend on the country of sale, check the applicable legislation before each sale.
